Re: Hey, I made a new thing.

Hah, thanks guys. Hope you enjoy. $30 seems high; it's pretty reasonable for a book from an academic publisher, believe it or not. Many university press books go for $90-100 apiece, when they know that the main audience will be university libraries and the author's family, who will buy it no matter ...

Star Wars Armada

I realized that I had a stockpile of Amazon gift certificates equal to half a month's rent that I couldn't actually spend on rent, so I decided to spend them on the next best thing: Star Wars Armada, the fleet-battle equivalent of the X-Wing miniatures tabletop game. Anyone else play? I know that Na...

Maybe the child can be traded into slavery for PAX East tickets at a future date. He's probably just thinking ahead to a point in the future when they're even rarer.

Nationwide (U.S.) Black Friday Bodycount Predictor Thread!

Black Friday isn't what it used to be, so I'm going to guess only two people crushed to death in mall related stampedes, with a smattering of hospitalizations.

Who wants to put money on it?

Happy StarCraft Day!

I feel like I'd be remiss if I allowed the release of a StarCraft-related thing to happen without saying something about it on a CWAL board.

I expect it to fall within a particular range of mediocrity, but I am treating myself to some nostalgia by going out and buying a box copy on launch day.

Re: So I've been on a Battletech kick lately.

It's been 15 months since I bought it and I still haven't finished painting all of the originals from the box set. But then again I'm mostly treating them as test pieces for the pewter ones I've been buying separately. I have a pewter Phoenix-Hawk that I intend to be the pride of my collection since...

Ooo, well done on the Mad Cat.

I love the drybrush effect on 'mechs. I've also found that dry-brushing varying shades of brown or metallics onto areas such as the feet or the weapons gives a very "worn-out" and grimy look that I really enjoy.

Re: Tablet shopping

Of course, I have an Ipad... but Apple has annoyed me lately releasing OS that make their older models run like shit. Whether that matters to you or not... It does, and that's why I've been resistant to the idea of getting an iPad. I hate that my iPhone is already significantly shittier in performa...

Tablet shopping

I've come to the slow realization that having a tablet around would probably be a force-multiplier for a lot of the work that I need to do, especially for events where I need a digital portfolio on-hand and where the gaming laptop might be a bit burdensome. Any recommendations? I have an iPhone 5s, ...

I remember all of my friends being enthralled by that game. I was so rubbish at it that I could never make the leap into obsession like I did with others.

That's funny. My first exposure was actually the tabletop game, back in the early 90s, and I remember squee'ing with delight and baffling all of my friends who were playing MechWarrior 2 with my inexplicable knowledge of all of the 'mechs. Also, I found a few photos of the 'mechs I painted and gave ...

In the summer of 2014 I picked this up again because one of my best friends, who was a BTech fanatic when we were teenagers, was getting married, and wanted a non-strip-club, low-key bachelor party. The best man asked me to "run" a BTech game for the party for old time's sake and I spent two months ...

This was my first time painting BattleTech, though I played a lot of it when I was younger and I had a boxed edition that came with just cardboard markers (sidenote: I can't believe what an outrageously good deal the current box set is in comparison -- you get what, 30 high-quality miniatures plus t...
